Welcome to my world.
In November 2009, I fell in love with a man who lives on a remote island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He is a captain of tall ships. At the time we met he was sailing the Liberty Clipper, of Boston, MA, from Baltimore, MD to the Bahamas for the winter.
Before meeting Hugh, I never dreamt that I would move to the UP. I had lived in Madison, WI for 14 years. Then life took me to Baltimore, MD, a city I enjoyed but never felt like home.
After living in Baltimore for three years I visited Hugh at his home on Shelter Island, just off of Drummond Island, MI, for the first time in April 2010. There and then, I fell in love with the island and him even more.
I had previously tried living off the grid, but too many things didn’t happen that made my dream not possible. Hugh was living my dream and I considered myself lucky that we loved each other and shared a common love – living life simply and to the fullest.
Professionally, I am a bodyworker and have a therapy practice on Drummond Island, Island Wellness Center. I teach workshops on SomaCentric Dialoguing and dissection classes, which focus on the central nervous system. I am also a published author, of the book The Insightful Body: Healing with SomaCentric Dialoguing published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, London. I am currently working on the layperson version of this book.
Many things keep me busy and if there were 25 hours in the day I’d find more things to do. In my spare time, when I’m not working with clients, writing, working on the island or cooking on the wood stove I enjoy reading, photography, star gazing, yoga, birding, mountain biking, piano playing, going to the symphony, cooking and contra dancing. There some of these things I can do easily on our remote 40 acre island and others are a bit trickier.
Once, like many others, I had only dreamt about living this type of life – off the grid, in a remote area of the North Woods. I consider myself very blessed to be able to live my dreams.
This blog is about my life, a life I thought I’d never be able to live. This blog is about dreams and ideals being manifested. It is about daily events with a backwoods twist. It is about the simple pleasures and wonders being brought forth. I invite you to be inspired and even, as some friends have, live vicariously through my words.
To help you follow my story easier, I have posted previous writings and emails that I sent to family and friends, starting with my first visit in April 2010.
And I welcome your thoughts, comments and questions.
